Togolese and friends of Togo around the world woke up
this morning to find that the list of candidates for
the presidential elections set for Sunday June 1st is
now minus one candidate. Professor Gnininvi of the
party CDPA (Democratic Convention of African People)
once again showed his leadership by taking himself and
his party from the race.
With the announcement of his intention to resign from
the race, Professor Gnininvi called on his party
members and Togolese in general to vote for Bob
Akitani of the UFC, the party of Gilchrist Olympio.
With this subtle action, Professor Gnininvi, this
veteran of the Togolese political scene, shows once
again that he has a real grasp on the situation in
Togo.
I tip my hat to Professor Gnininvi for his political
courage and his vision. I hope that other candidates
will duplicate his great political move. The Togolese
people will remember and reward Professor Gnininvi for
this selfless act.
To the remaining candidates of the opposition, it is
not too late to do the right thing. Your ability to
show a unified front against Eyadema is indispensable
for the international community support.
