Mr. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic of France
Palais de l'Elysée
55, rue du faubourg Saint-Honoré
75008 Paris
To his Excellence Mr. Jacques Chirac:
We are quiet aware of your personal relationship with Gnassingbe Eyadema, Africa’s longest dictator and President of Togo. Any direct or indirect efforts to recognize his illegitimate government is a political mistake by you and by France. Supporting or recognizing Eyadema’s proclamation of victory of his party RPT is taking France out the reconstruction and rebuilding of Togo and Africa.
The people of Togo have not elected Gnassingbe Eyadema. Gnassingbe Eyadema stole the election by fabricating the election results through intimidation and terror.
We, the intellectuals and professional people of Togo residing in the US will not tolerate nor see the repeat of 1998 election aftermath in Togo.
We are asking you not to recognize his victory nor support him. Without your support and the army machinery, Eyadema is nothing and will not have been there this long. This is a new era and Eyadema should not be in the picture for Togo not for France. You could still have your friendship with Eyadema but not at the expense of the people of Togo.
Yes, France has a tarnished image in Africa today because of her policies in West Africa dated from General De Gaulle, Pompidou, Giscard D’Estaing, Francois Mitterrand, and yourself. In addition to this top list we will also add Foccart, with the code name ”le Malheur de l’Afrique” because of his organizing and planning of all the coups d’etat in Africa.
We do have this dossier on France and do not want to see the destruction of our people again by one nation over another. We are all born equal and deserve the rights to live in peace in our countries.
We hope you understand our serious concerns about the events in Togo and you will do everything in your power to help get the dictator out of power as soon as possible to clear your image and the tarnished image of France in West Africa. The people of Togo do not want Eyadema. Eyadema is manipulating you and the international community through planned and orchestrated public relationship which has become his modus operandi.
Sincerely,
The concerned people of Togo In the United States.
