The Togolese government has closed the University of Lome due to unrest,
according to official sources in the Togolese capital.
The authorities said Wednesday that they had decided to suspend classes
"to avoid the intensification of the unrest stirred up by the students"
on Tuesday.
The students' spokesman said that they had stage the protest on the
campus to call on the national education minister to resign. No reason
was given for the move.
The students, however, also demanded the payment of six months of the
15 months of outstanding grants, allowances for two meals a day instead
of a single daily meal in the university's restaurant, as well as an increase
in the number of buses for their transportation.
Security forces dispersed the protest.
