Togo's National Commission on Corruption and Economic Sabotage set up last
January, has reported that the government owes 14.470 million francs cfa
(1 US dollar = 700 fcfa) in unpaid telephone bills accumulated between
1994 and 2000.
The Commission noted that bills of officials and retired civil servants
were still being paid by the State.
It added that even the names of deceased persons still feature on the
official list of customers.
Telephone lines connected to the international network "are made available
to anyone without any supervision," the commission said.
The report explained that following the check, several official telephone
lines have been suspended and others restricted.
