Students at Lome University have described as "insufficient" the decision
by President Gnassingbe Eyadema to pay only a month out of the 16 months
grant government owes them arrears.
Eyadema visited the university Tuesday promising to one- month grant
to the students beginning Wednesday.
But the student body said that was not a solution to their problems.
Students Council president Thomas Kondi Gnandi observed that paying
just a month's arrears out of the accumulated 16 months is considered by
the students as "an injury" in view of the problems facing them, including
rent arrears that some students owe for up to six months.
Gnandi said "the students are disappointed with the outcome of their
meeting with President Eyadema," reminding him "how the government closed
the university campus in 1999 for repairs and promised to accommodate them
in private buildings".
He said the students have decided to continue their strike until their
demands are met.
