Eyadema Tries to Calm University Unrest

(Panafrican News Agency (PANA),  Lome, Togo,  May 16, 2001)

Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema on Tuesday met with Lome University lecturers and students, who have been boycotting classes to protest the non-payment of allowances.

In his address, Eyadema proposed dialogue rather than confrontation in efforts to solve the problems confronting Lome University.

"Nothing can be done in the absence of peace and security," said Eyadema, who expressed concern over the situation at the university.

Lome University students had embarked on two-day strike to demand the payment of outstanding grants and better conditions of learning.

Meanwhile, university lecturers and researchers grouped under the Union of Togolese lecturers have written the Rector-Chancellor of Universities to complain against the expulsion of student leaders.

Lome University Students Council members, including their president Gnandi Kondi, are among a group that has been expelled from the institution.

The lecturers and researchers also denounced the presence of "security forces" on campus and appealed on university authorities to opt for dialogue instead of resorting to repression.
