Trial of ex-minister postponed

(Pan African News Agency (PANA),  Lome, Togo,  June 13, 2001)

The trial of former Togolese Human Rights Minister Harry Octaviano Olympio has been postponed to 19 June.

The trial was postponed at the request of defence lawyers. Accused of illegally keeping explosives, Olympio was detained by police on 5 June.

Togolese Foreign Affairs and Co-operation Minister, Kofi Panou, told diplomats in Lome last week that police had evidence that the ex-minister had kept explosives in his office. Olympio is also the president of the Rally for the Support of Democracy and Development.
