The public prosecutor in Togo has
proposed a six-year suspended sentence suspended plus a fine of
360.000 francs CFA for human rights activist Harry Octaviano
Olympio, charged with conspiracy and illegal possession of
arms.
Olympio is accused of keeping locally made grenades at the
headquarters of his party.
But the former Togolese minister of Human Rights and
Democratisation pleaded not guilty.
His lawyers described the trial as political, and asked
the court to discharge and acquit him.
A ruling is expected next Tuesday.
