The National Electoral Independent
Committee (CENI) in Togo has proposed revision of voters' roll
beginning 7 December in anticipation of early parliamentary
elections in the country next March.
The proposal was approved in a presidential decree issued at the
end of a cabinet meeting in Kara, some 400km north of Lome,
official sources said Wednesday.
The decree says "that decision confirms the government's
willingness to make all necessary preparations for the holding of
fair and transparent parliamentary elections as soon as
possible".
The first round of vote is scheduled for 10 March 2002.
Major delays in preparations necessitated the postponement from
14-18 October 2001 to the new date, electoral officials
explained.
