Togolese election body decries assault on member

(PANAPRESS Agency,  Lome, Togo,   November 27, 2001)

Togo's National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) has condemned an assault earlier Sunday on one of its members, Andre Kuevi, who is also member of the opposition Union of Forces for Change (UFC), led by Gilchrist Olympio.

In a statement Monday, CENI said the act "hinders the smooth running of its activities."

It said Kuevi was in Kara - where the incident occurred - on a training mission organised for Local Independent Electoral Commission (CELI) members and those of the Lists and Cards Committees (CLC).

The election body said it would pursue, without let-up, the mission bestowed it by the Togolese people, adding it would spare no effort to ensure the parliamentary elections are conducted peacefully and with transparency.

Meanwhile, the government, in a statement from Interior, Security and Decentralisation minister Sizing Walla confirmed that Kuevi was assaulted while on a mission in Kara "by unidentified persons."

It said "investigations were afoot were underway to find the perpetrators and bring them to book."
