China grants Togo $140,000 in aid

(PANAPRESS Agency,  Lome, Togo,   December 15, 2001)

China has donated 140,000 US dollars to Togo following the signing of a draft agreement in Lome by the country's foreign minister Koffi Panou and the Chinese ambassador Yin Yubiao.

The amount is intended to help organise the 10 to 24 March 2002 general elections in the tiny West African country.

"This modest contribution is an indication of the feeling of friendship and solidarity of the Chinese people towards Togo which is going through a difficult situation," Yin said.

Togo has already received financial and material assistance from France, the European Union, the Francophonie International Organisation (OIF) and the UN Development Programme for the holding of a free and fair general election.
