Togo inches a step further in Cup of Nations bid

(PANAPRESS Agency,  Sikasso, Mali,   January 26, 2002)

Togo and DR Congo Saturday played a goalless draw at the Cup of Nations finals, leaving the Togolese on two points, one better than DR Congo and Cote d'Ivoire, on a point each.

In a low-keyed encounter at Sikasso counting for the second day of play in Round One of the Cup of Nations finals underway in Mali, Togo and DR Congo tied 0-0 in a tournament already noted for a paucity of goals.

The Congolese, who were off to a bad start losing 0-1 to defending champions Cameroon, now rank at the bottom of Group C together with Cote d'Ivoire, while Cameroon tops the pool on 6 points from two wins.

The Cameroonians are already through to the quarterfinals, while Togo, DR Congo and Cote d'Ivoire must win their last match to move onto the second round of the tournament.

Togo has a match to go with Cameroon, while DR Congo would on the last day take on Cote d'Ivoire.

In the last match scheduled for Saturday, Senegal is currently locking horns with Zambia in Bamako.
