SA slams Togo president

(Sapa-AFP ,  February 21, 2005)

Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has called for Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe Eyadema to step down from power and allow new presidential elections to be organised by others.

Faure took over from his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who recently died in office.

Speaking in Swaziland where she is attending a special AU meeting, Dlamini Zuma said: "(Togo's) constitution spells out what should happen should the president die or be incapacitated for one reason or another.

"Mr Eyadema, who is now in power, has no constitutional authority or legitimacy to call for the elections or to organise elections." -
